lifestyle change medicine
Welcome to my first Blog post . Ill uise this first one an opportunity to introduce myself and explain why I do what I do.
May 30 of this year I celebrated 20 years in practice as a Family Medicine Physician. I love medicine and I love helping people.
Over those twenty years , I started to feel exhausted, stressed daily, anxious and depressed and I was losing empathy.
After a lot of unhappiness with my previous practice environments and soul searching, I decided there had to be a better way to care for patients and maintain my self care.
I was constantly being told I was taking too long with patients or that I was not seeing enough patients. I have even been told that I should do my job "a little less well."
At the same time I was treating and watching people develop chronic diseases like diabetes , obesity, high blood pressure , cancer, etc.
Some people were improving, yet, after all the required handouts at the end of patient visits , requirement by the govermnment and insurance , the hours of EHR documentation, I wasn't really seeing the needle move for my patients. They were dependent on that 15 minute doctor visit. I was spending less time on patient care.
I felt like I was writing prescriptions and entering data ( while my employers were carefully watching my data to determine what kind of care I was providing ) but nothing was changing.
I had always been active and enjoyed sports. I spent less time participating in what I enjoyed. The thought of being active daily was encouraging.
At some point I found ACE, The American Council on Exercise and realized that I believe in everything they were trying to do. More imprtantly, I wanted it to be part what I had to offer my patients. I decided to become a Personal Trainer and a Health Coach.
I have seen this quote many places :
MEDICINE IS NOT HEALTHCARE . FOOD IS HEALTHCARE . MEDICINE IS SICK CARE . ITS TIME WE SEE IT FOR WHAT IT IS.
The battle to create medically independent, healthy people will not be won only in the doctor's office.
Healthcare won't change unless we understand WELLNESS is not maintained only in the doctors office. Disease needs to be treated, but we also need to invest in REAL PREVENTION
I believe HEALTHCARE involves
The dietician and nutritionist and trips the grocery store
The fitness professional and the health coaches who can help you get moving and hold you accountable
The YMCA where there are programs for the whole family
Physical therapist and massage therapist who can help after inury
Liscensed therapist who can help you to work through whatever is preventing you from reaching your goal.
I left a lot of disciplines off but you undestand what I mean. Whatever practioner you need to GET WELL AND STAY WELL.
I decided to create a preactice that worked harder on keeping people well , instead of just treating them when they were sick . BRAND NEW MED was born.
